[Dailydrool] Meet Ruby, our other $5 Friday hound for April

When I posted last time, I had very little info on Ruby - last
night I was given her story  so here it is . . .

Ruby came into the rescue because of a divorce and the spouse who had her couldn't care for her any more. She is 13 years old and a complete sweetheart. At the time she came to Oregon Basset Rescue, the vet said she was 25 to 30 pounds under weight. She couldn't walk properly due to overgrown nails. All of her fur had fallen out over the entire length of her back and on most of her tail. She had infections in both eyes and ears and she scratched constantly. The rescue had been told that the previous owners had tried using an expensive dog food to see if that would help with the skin conditions and weight gain but it hadn't worked.
One trip to the vet, a ton of medications, constant TLC from her foster parents and 3 weeks later Ruby was doing 1000 times better. She had medicated drops for her eyes and ears. She had fish oil added to her food and prednisone for her itching. She received several antibiotics to help get the skin infection and gum infections under control. She also got medicated soap for her skin and good balanced nutrition. She was started on glucosamine for joint comfort and her fur has regrown on her back and tail. She no longer scratches every minute. And she gained 16 pounds.
But she still has some work ahead. She will be going in to get updated on her vaccines since she now LOVES to go to the dog park with her foster dad and visit with other senior dogs. Once we have her stable and put some more weight on her - she will be evaluated to see if she can have a dental cleaning done and remove any bad teeth. Depending on how she does after the course of prednisone, she may need to be evaluated for food allergies.
