A few years ago a Rottweiler decided to attack Harley at the dogpark. The rottie got a good bit of Harley's neck and wouldn't let go although both I and the rottie's owner were beating and pulling on the rottie. Harley was screaming. The dog officers inside the building (the park is part of the Humane Society) came running out and what they did was as follows--One guy lifted the hind legs of the rottie off the ground as if he was going to play wheelbarrow with the dog, then he twisted to one side, essentially rolling the dog, which had to let go or break its neck. It let go of Harley and the officer dragged the Rottweiler clear. the dog officer recommended this technique if the top, aggressor dog has a vice lock on the underdog. Don't know if it would hurt a basset's back, but it was quick and effective with the Rottweiler. Val
