[Dailydrool] Allergies

I have heard good things about Temaril-P and am going to see if Foxy might
be put on it. Per other posts, I've been working on/with Foxy (a GGBR
foster) for about 6 months now.

I am by no means an expert--there are others on this list who really ARE
allergy experts--all I can share is that, with Foxy, it has been a
complicated process. Because she is a foster, it just isn't responsible to
spend a ton of money on her for allergy testing, so we've been focusing on
food and on external triggers.

She is on Royal Canin's blue bag formula that's supposed to be totally
neutral in terms of allergens. Foxy eats it well, although I have to
segregate her from Claire the Trembling's salmon and sweet potato kibble.
Like any hound, Foxy wants whatever everyone else has.

That seems to have helped. It also helped that I noticed, quite by
accident, that she was broken out after going out into my back yard and
into the grass. I think dust may also be a trigger, but that is harder to
track. I wipe her down every time she comes in from the back yard--it helps.

We also give her 50 mg of Hydroxazine 2x a day, morning and evening. That
seems to help.

She was on shots (antibiotics, apparently) that helped a lot, but hasn't
needed a shot for almost 2 months now.

All I can say, again, is that it is a struggle and an ongoing detective
story. Several other basset owners have told me that allergy testing has
helped a lot in figuring out what the triggers are. I leave it to them to
tell their stories.
