Ken belongs to a Bible study group comprised of about ten other pastors. They meet every Monday for lunch, discussion, and moral support when their congregations are being difficult. Today they ate lunch at a university near the church of one of the group’s members.

During their lunch, someone from the admissions office stopped by their table to tell them a little about the school. At one point she asked if any of them had a teen in the congregation or their own families who might want to go to the college. Now Ken and I don’t have children, so he told her, “I have two bassets, and they can’t pass the good citizenship test, so I don’t think they’d be admitted here.” Apparently the admissions officer gave him an odd look before changing the subject.

After lunch, as they were walking across the campus, one of the pastors asked Ken what he’d said to the admissions officer. Ken repeated himself, and the pastor said with obvious relief, “Oh, I thought you told her you had two bastards, not bassets.”

So now an admissions officer at Cumberland University is under the impression that a Presbyterian pastor in Nashville is quite comfortable admitting he has two bastards who aren’t good citizens.

Ken has GOT to learn how to enunciate!

For the record, our Elsinore and young Charlie Basset are NOT bastards and both of them passed their Canine Good Citizen test with flying colors. It’s the neutral dog part of the Pet Partners pet therapy test that gives them trouble.

Oh, and Val, Elsinore and I were delighted by the limerick you wrote for her. She is indeed, in so many wonderful ways, a “life enhancer” as the limerick says. But definitely a basset, not a bastard, life enhancer.

Elizabeth
