Blue in the canine world while beautiful is a sign of a recessive defective gene somewhere in the bloodline. These animals can have a host of aliments as they mature. Noted problems are hearing, visual, skin defects, kidney defects and emotional aggression. An excellent breeder would never try and pass these pups off as rare. A bad breeder would and this is happening everywhere and with many breeds. Blue in collies, austrailian shepards, husky etc. is acceptable. Bassets...no, as we all know this is not in the standard.
We should do all we can to educate people that are interested in getting a basset.
With this said, i would rescue a blue basset if one needed a home and also if i could afford to. But I would really need to consider the cost. Also the emotional heartache... I am sorry but I worry myself sick over my pups, and I have had the breed for 30 yrs... is does not get easier saying goodbye.
I have seen a blue two week old pup, the breeder was giving it away for free, the breeder chose to raise the pup till it was four months old then she was spaying as to end the passage of the gene.
