A few weeks ago I posted about my notabasset, Millie, who was 13, blind and deaf.  I looked for confirmation that my decision to end her life with dignity rather than pain was confirmed by several fellow Droolers and for that, I thank you.  I made the terrible decision and on Saturday, November 8, Millie left for the bridge.   Because she was blind, she refused to leave my porch to get to the car.  My son picked her up and put her in the car.   This was a dog who was terrified of the car because it only meant a trip to the vet (prior to coming to us).  Because of the difficulty getting her to the car, I didn't think I would be able to get her to walk up the ramp blindly into the vet's office.  I went into the office and settled the financial issues and went back to the car.  Millie wanted out of the car.  I put on her leash, picked her up and put her on the ground.  She walked around a little, sniffed a little, peed and walked up the ramp without any hesitation to the office.  Once inside, she sat beside me and waited.  This is a dog who would go into a full blown panic attack, pacing/panting/trembling while at the vet and she just sat and waited for her name to be called (although she couldn't hear it since she was deaf).  

It never gets any easier but somehow I think she knew...and I knew it was the right thing to do although it broke my heart and I cried all day any time I said her name.

We have 2 other dogs at home.  We have Buddy the mutt and Reba the Bassett (WTH...Spell correct keeps putting a capital on Bassett!  Lol).  Buddy is what everyone refers to as their heart dog.  Buddy has been on this earth before in another form and I truly believe that.  If you look in his eyes, I swear you can see into his soul!  I showed him Millie's collar, he smelled it, bowed his head, lowered his ears and walked away.  Reba smelled it and got all excited, wagging her tail and arooing.

My story was told through tears to let all who question whether there is a Rainbow Bridge know that I truly think we all have a destiny and purpose.  Live life like a dog...live every moment, take a minute to stop and smell everything but most importantly....love everybody you sniff!  Thank you all and thank you all for being my cyber friends.
