[Dailydrool] Paddi B Basset -- the shame of a broken winning streak

Paddi B Basset is hanging her ears in shame.

Every Wednesday at our house, we host Wednesday Tea -- an Occasion at which
the good china is used, tea and dainties are served, and only those with
two feet are allowed on the furniture unless invited by a guest. (This last
rule sometimes seems very difficult.) (But fortunately there are good
guests who invite bassets up to the couch.)

Paddi B Basset love tea. She loves greeting people at the door, visiting
with them (especially the good ones; see paragraph above) and generally
swanning about. She wags with great enthusiasm, and her wags are always met
with enthusiastic cries of "watch the cups!" -- since the cups are on the
coffee table at tail height.

She is proud to be Good At Tea. Vowing to be Good At Tea (her new year's
resolution three yars ago) won her a promotion to being able to attend tea
instead of being put in the laundry room with a bone. And she has been Good
At Tea, for ages, ever since that one unfortunate incident of the
three-year-old and the cookie. (How could a basset know that a cookie, held
at nose height, was not intended for her?)

But last week, the good streak was broken. There were particularly nice
goodies, and suddenly, like a shark, she came from beneath the coffee table
and was eating one.

The shame.

(Note: She does not seem to be too downtrodden by this. I think Vernon Q,
who is always Good At Tea, was a little embarrassed, though.)

Mary
& Paddi B Basset, doing her best,
& Vernon Q Basset, always and forever Good At Tea
