Molly,
I have had several Bassets bloat on me.  None, thank Dawg have passed due to
it, but it is not an experience anyone wants to go through, hound or human.
If you vet is willing and your hound is able to undergo a little longer
surgery, I would absolutely do it!
They can still bloat, but the chances of them having a torsion bloat is far
less.

As Katie wrote,  it could well have saved Lilie's life.
