Hounds in my life have always had long names, primarily as I am 4th generation basset person and show hounds was my whelping reality. Transitioning to rescue when I was but a pup myself, I kept the long name process, the official name, and then the call name. In childhood there was KenGales Silky of Valwood, Princess Wanona, Sir Claude Droopledorf and then came Cocshall La Sabertooth Pooch. Followed quickly by Barnaby Legs Chidester, and then the list grew by leaps and bounds.

When a female comes in too far gone to spay and we have to whelp, we pick a theme. Parvo Puppies (came in with parvo), Christmas Puppies (puppymill came in at Christmas time), Firecrackers (4th of July), Kiss Puppies (named after a volunteer that had been absent for a long time), Anniversary Puppies (came in on Daphneyland's Anniversary), Lucky Charms (St. Patricks Day), Barbie Pups (Mom was Barbie, we named the pups after Barbie doll friends) - etc.

70 hounds daily, every day. One gets adopted, another arrives. 300 - 500 adoptions annually and then the family crisis and reunification cases.... I no longer name hounds. Volunteers transporting the dogs get to name them I veto names. lol. Some names I have veto'd were: Fat & Stinky, Bubble Butt, Flufferpants, Slimester, the list is long.
If a hound comes in with a name, we keep it but might have to change spelling or add to it to keep hound records clear, if a hound does not have a name - then it gets named so the rabies certificate matches the dog's records. I once gave a baby name book to a volunteer that seemed to only name hounds Sweetie, Lovey, Honey, Sugar, etc. I went through the book and blacked out names he could not use.

Our current list is: AZBHR Droopy, Bart, Beau, Bella Donna, Bogie, Bone-Z, Brownie, Capt. Morgan (cuz he says Grrrr), Carmen, Charlie, Copper, Cora, Droop #2 (we already had a Droopy), Duke, Dutch, Elvis, Emma, Ernie, Fred, Gina, Ginger (red head), Hamlet, Henry (cuz he barks like all Henry's do), Honey, Jack Wabbit, JB, Jelly Bean (cute as a..), enna, Lady of SF (as opposed to other ladies from different areas), Leonardo, Lexi, Lil Charlie (as we have a big one), Lizzy Too (again, there was another Lizzy), Lucky Star, Luke of AZ (there was another Luck at the time), Mariah (Windy day and named after best friends daughter), Marley, Martha, Marv, MoJo, Mollee Dollee (many Molly's at her original time of intake), Nita (Jill Peterson's St/boxer mix - Jill named her Juanite, we shortened it to Nita). Noodle (slippery as...), Norman, Opus, Otto, Penelope, Perry, Petey, Potato (he was a tater tot when he came in the first time), Ralphie, Red Daisy (Always have Daisy's - guess what color she is!), Roscoe, RosKo (yep, you got it, had several at the time), Rosemarie, Sampson, Sandie, Spot, Stanley, Stella, Taurus (Big like Bull!), Tica (volunteer had just returned from Costa Rica), Tinkerbelle, Tootsie, Tucker, Valentine, Waldo, Walter Matthau (several Walters at the time, this one had the name already, and looked like...), Winston, Woofus, Fosters: LeRoy, Jed, Presley, Gem, Cooper. Bonnie,

We have drawers full of files on the following names (and every version of spelling you can think of): Daisy, Duke, Walter, Luke, Droopy, Roscoe, Coltrain, Lucy, Barney, Fred, Buford, Beau, Maggie, Honey, Red, Sugar, Willie, Cleo, Chloe, Hannah, Elvis, and for some reason Dee-O-Gee (or Dawg or Dog or...).

We even have a shelter coordinator that resorted to hispanic names just to keep from having multiple hounds with the same name.
The name game. Always looking for a new and unique one!
