As always, I am a walking commercial for Pet Gear. We have three ramps. One is a sliding thing we got first. It is a bit of a pain in the neck and all too easy to get fingers caught in. It works, but I do like my skin. The best one we have is a two section Pet Gear folding ramp. It is long enough to allow the hounds to get into Rich's van or the small BUV that I purchased it for, without being too steep. It is a bit steep for my Houndie Santa Feyfey. I do have to lend a hand sometimes for Pawtunia to get in, although she does not mind her butt scooped. It has a latch on the side, is sturdy and we use it almost exclusively. We also have a small folding ramp that is supposed to be for vans. It is good, not long enough for the BUV but will do for a van. If you want ours, you can have it for Willie.

Pet gear now has freestanding ones with folding supports underneath. They look good. If I had to buy a new one I might consider how those work..... but since their products are pretty indestructible, I figure the ones we have will be here long after I am gone.

Here's the page. Shop around. Amazon usually has good Pet Gear prices.

Yeah, Bronwyn!  Isn't that one of the famous Basset Songs from long ago?

I'm diggin' in the rain

Just diggin' in the rain

What a glorious feelin'

I'm happy again.

I'm barking at clouds.

So dark up above

My bunn?s in the mud

And i'm ready for love.

We had a deck put into our yard and had the builder put a ramp to the house in at the same time. We have rails on the side so that a Basset won't accidentally walk off the side in the dark or the partially blind Basset we had at the time walk off the side. It is ten years since we had it installed and don't regret it since we foster senior Bassets.??Your Friend in Bassets,

Dog Ramps:

About 10 years or so ago, when I was first indoctrinated into the Ways of the Bassets, I purchased a 5' x 17" one-piece, molded plastic ramp for my then-BUV, a Ford Windstar, from http://dogramp.com/dogramp/.  It is still in service today.  I LOVE IT!!  It is VERY sturdy, has carpeting for doggy toes to grip, and best of all, I can literally handle it with one hand if need be.  It is light in weight, but NOT in its construction.  It can support 200 pounds easily, and I've even used it for things other than hounds...like heavy suitcases.  I highly recommend DogRamps.com.  The service from them was quick, too.

I wish now, though, that I'd seen into the future a bit more and bought the longer, telescoping ramp because my Honda Odyssey sits a bit higher in the rear deck where my crates go and makes the incline a bit steep, so I have to help the kids into the van by using their harnesses as "handles".  My present ramp is ideal for getting them in and out the side doors, though, because it makes a lower incline.  I am looking to purchase the longer ramp, and will definitely go back to these folks when I buy.

For those of you with a pool, check out their pool ramps, too!

I just received a call from a friend of mine in Colorado Springs.  They
were at the Chapel Hills Mall and they went into Pet City to get kitty
litter.  They said that in the back of the store they have a basset hound
puppy, covered in its own feces, with ribs showing.  They said the buppy
looked so bad that they almost bought it, but they didn't want to support a
store that treats puppies that way, so they contacted me to see if there
was anything Rescue could do.  Is there??  I think my friends would be
willing to pay for the buppy if a rescue would take it, and while I abhor
the idea of supporting puppy mills, I also don't want to see a buppy
suffering.

So is there anyone in the Colorado Springs area who can help with this?
Can the local rescue go check it out?  They were afraid to call animal
control because A- they didn't know if animal control would do anything,
and B- they didn't want the pet store to destroy the "evidence"!

This is the information on the store:

Barb,

I happened to have an extra wheelchair ramp that I use for all of mine
now.  You can buy one new from a medical supply place, but check your local
ads, and maybe even Craigslist. You can buy a used one for not too much
money.

I'm not sure where you live, but you might even ask the medical supply
places if they know of anyone that has a used one.

Hope this helps. They might need some coaxing to use it. Babe was forever
trying to walk up the stairs around the ramp.

My heart is heavy for those of you in areas of flooding. I hope and pray
that all of you and your families are safe!!

Dear Snoopy, Everyone at our house eats mud...and poop. The water gets
quite disgusting. It doesn't matter though. We have trained the mom to
think any time one of us needs a drink that it has to be cool, fresh water.
So if we want a drink, we go to the bowl, snort and shake our head. She
drops whatever she is doing and gets us fresh, cool water. It is not a
girls are gross problem. It is a you haven't adequately trained you humans
problem.

Dearest Droolers, I know the subject of excess shedding has been kicked around in the past, but I don't remember what what to do about it.?
Oh, and if it would please the Gods, send some of the rain in Texas to us here in California so we can water our lawns and wash our cars again. Thanks so much Vikki

Suggestion for the Colorado Puppy/pet store problem. Even if you rescue the
puppy here is an idea.
Find out from the store who their Veterinarian is.
Many Vets will work with a store and keep it very quiet because they do not
want people to see them as contributing to the problem, but someone needs
to serve those puppies in the meantime, so they do.

Call the Vet and ask why the puppy looks like that and ask what you can do
to help, rather than being accusatory
You may be told to butt out, but you have notified the Vet that an outside
agency (you) is aware of that Puppy.

Just a thought.

Do any of you ever feel like your furbabies have inherited traits from you
or your significant other? Right now I am taking grief because Bugsey fell
in his hole. Most of you have figured out that I am not exactly the picture
of grace. I am always managing to do something to myself. So is Bugsey. I
think he is the klutziest basset I have ever known!

It isn't to the point that you think he has a neurological problem. I
suspect he either doesn't have great vision, or he has lousy depth
perception. I wear my glasses any time I am awake. I have horrible depth
perception. We both are always tripping over curbs and walking into
doorways. Oh well! I love him dearly anyway. He has a slight limp again. He
fell on the side where he hurt his foot and ankle. Yes, he is truly my
child!

now!), and Browyn the Fairy Princess (I have NEVER fallen in a hole I dug
or otherwise and I get to sing in the rain again today!)

Hey everyone! Remember how I told you the mom got off her duff and finally
made some homemade treats--Banana Pumpkin brownies? Well here is the deal,
while they were still warm (but not hot) she cut us some and let us eat
them. They were very yummy and a respectable sized treat. Then she decided
that she cut them too big for a rgular treat. So she chilled them so she
could cut them up smaller! She cut the size we got before into 4 treats! Is
there some law that governs the size treat we are supposed to get? I think
she is breaking it. I don't want her jailed or anything. Afterall, the dad
isn't going to make homemade treats, but I want her to be threatened with a
fine for not complying.

Jennifer here. I am going to use this opportunity to give a brief tutorial
on treats. Some of you may know I have a degree in animal science and a
minor in nutrition. On top of that I am fascinated by dog nutrition and
read everything I can get my hands on about the subject. If you go to
dogfoodadvisor.com there is a section where you can figure out how many
calories your dog is supposed to be eating per day. Keep in mind that this
is no more set in stone than our calorie requirements. Different factors
can change this. You can look on your bag of dog food, go to their website,
or call customer service to find out how many calories are in a cup of dog
food. Here is the clincher: your dog should only be eating 10% of his or
her calories in the form of treats. This is why my treat size is so small
unless it is veggies or fruit. Just like us, they can eat a lot of those!
Do your basset a favor and if possible, keep the weight down. It really
helps those little short legs and backs. By the way, if your dog is very
sick or very old or both, all this goes out the window. Llewis can eat
whatever Bev can get him to eat. At this point if she can get him to eat DQ
ice cream, that is
