Get a good Glucosamine supplement with MSN and condrointin. 
I killed my first basset by giving him aspirin. That was 
almost 30 years ago and I didn't know then. One day he just 
laid down on the carpet and threw up his guts on the floor. 
His stomach had bled out. Metacam is a safe NSAID, so is 
rimadyl or deramax. Blood work will tell if there are any 
underling conditions that would warrant giving one over the 
other.
