Someone asked me to repeat the story of Rolph and the police.
Some years ago we lived in a seaside town. The dogs loved going to the beach to eat and roll in stinking dead things. The council then issued a decree that dogs were no longer allowed on the beach between May and September. For ages, we just didn't go down there, but one day I stupidly thought "We don't have to go on the beach, we can just walk along the promenade."
So we walked down to the seafront and started along the prom. Rolph was not happy. He wanted to play on the beach.I was not prepared to pay the large fine if we were caught. None of us enjoyed the walk. I was having my shoulders pulled out of their sockets by a truculent hound, Clara was just trying to make the best of it and Rolph was pulling and fighting to get over the sea wall on to the beach.
After about half a mile, I'd had enough of the fight and turned back to walk home. Rolph, fearing he'd lost, threw an immovable flat basset.
I called him, I cajoled him, I begged him, I bribed him, but nothing would get his hairy haunches up off that pavement. In desperation I tried dragging him.
A pair of cops cruising past must have thought I was trying to steal two dogs. They pulled up beside me and cracked the car door open (probably expecting to chase a dognapper), asking me what was going on. I explained Rolph was furious at missing out on the beach, and assured them he was just protesting. They agreed I mustn't take him there or they would be forced to fine me.
At this moment, Rolph unglued himself from the flagstones and leaped straight into the police car. Clara, clearly feeling she was missing out, followed suit. So there I was explaining myself to a pair of coppers while my dogs placed themselves in protective custody. The coppers were, of course, peeing themselves.
I was, by this point mortified and calling the dogs back. Clara, always my good dog, jumped out and came to me, as I bent down to pat her head, Rolph jumped out of the car, straight past me and over the sea wall on to the beach (a 5ft drop). As there was no access to the beach at that point, I then had to walk along the promenade about 200yards with a blue-flashing cop car keeping pace with me until I could retrieve him.
He was soooooo proud of himself.
Sally, with Rolph and Clara, UK who no longer live near the sea.
