First off, as long as you do pre-blood work before having your hound's
teeth cleaned and everything comes back fine, 9 is not too old to clean
teeth! I have a friend who is a vet. She is adament that as long as the
blood work is good and the heart is in great shape, there is not a set age
on when a dog is too old to have dental work done. Think about how bad you
feel when you have a bunch of bad teeth in your mouth!

Preventative care as recommended by a board certified dental vet/oral
surgeon:

1. Brush teeth every day with CET toothpaste. They have found that most
dogs will tolerate the vanilla mint.

2. Provide a chew from the list of accepted VOHC Accepted Producted for
dogs.
The OraVet chew is too new to be on the list, but that is what they are
     recommending for Bugsey
3. Essential Healthymouth anti-plaque water additive.
4. Essential Healthymouth gel, only because of his gingivitis

The website for most of the products is at:
http://www.vohc.org/accepted_products.htm

I hope this helps
