To make this basset-related, dear Simba would never bite Paddi. He values
his good health too much.

But he has bitten DH, aka Robbie, and he's bitten our neighbour, and he's
bitten Robbie's brother the police officer (oops), and he's bitten R's
sister. Twice. We have him because he bit two children in the townhouse
complex where he used to live.

He is not mean. He's the nicest dog in the world, and knows all kinds of
things like shake a paw, sit, wait, all that stuff. But when he is scared,
he bites first and asks questions later.

We now put a cloth muzzle on him whenever anyone comes over. When they've
been here for a while and have talked to him, we take it off. He loves
people -- so much so in fact that now whenever the muzzle comes out, he
wags his tail furiously because he knows it means company is coming.

Pam, thank you for the book recommendations. We're doing pretty well with
him, but I am looking forward to learning more. Neither Paddi, Vernon Q nor
Billy B have had a nervous bone in their bodies -- Simba the Formosan
Mountain Dog is the first nervous dog we've had.
