[Dailydrool] Flipped Spleen

My 10 year old smaller girl had a spleen as large as a dinner plate that was torn on one end at the same time as torsion/bloat. Vet wasn't sure which came first. But removed the giant spleen, righted the stomach, no damage, tacked it down and closed. Now she is acting like a five year old. Won the Champion class at the last field trial. No lumps. Just a tear on the end. But it was HUGE.

So I have decided to bite the bullet and just go to a vet my friend used to take hers to. This particular vet is no where near me but it's really the only one I trust since my old vet left. I just worry that if I ever had an emergency he would be too far away for me to get to him. But I think it is better than not going at all. I really do think his hearing is failing and this weekend he crashed into the sliding door when he was going out even though it was open. So I think getting him to a vet sooner than later is better.

Yesterday my daughter was at her grandparents and I don't know if that had an effect on Speedy because he was super cuddly and more like his damning-I-want-to-be-cuddled self in months. Since he is older I worry my time with him is counted but when I see him trying to sniff out the gopher in our back yard I think maybe I'll be lucky and have him a few more years. Either way I need a vet to put me at ease (or not).

Hi Nan,
the quilt you won really can go on the bed. It is 100% cotton (can't recall if the batting is also 100%cotton or 80/20 cotton/poly--I have both in my cupboard). It has been machine washed once (cold water wash, medium dry) with no ill effects. It is not a delicate creature. And if it suffers any mishaps, I'll gladly repair it. The technique used is something called "watercolor quilting", where many small squares of color are combined to create a larger whole which is supposed to resemble the brush strokes of an Impressionist painting.

Your quilt took a third place ribbon in our every two years island quilt show in Hawaii. winners are chosen by popular vote (one vote per attendee). About four hundred attended the quilt show. These days when I make a quilt for a local show, if I can, I include basset hounds so I can pass the quilt along for a basset fundraiser. If you would like the ribbon I won ( quilt shows are not lucrative here-- they usually give little fake satin ribbons, lol ), let me know and I would be happy to send it along.

GO, bassets!

And here is a long- held, never before revealed secret (true confession): it has been about ten years since I joined the Drool list. My first love was always art. I pursued a different career for twenty some years to support myself and family and for many years my art endeavors languished. It was only later in life ( about the time I joined the Drool) that I returned to art, first to painting and then to textiles and art quilting. In the early posts of the Drool regarding artwork, I often saw references to "our own" Pam Tanzey. Pam is a fabulous artist whose skills I will never approach. But I thought to myself, " If I am ever referred to on the Daily Drool, with respect to artwork, as " our own Val Brewer", I will consider myself a success. I! Of course, never confided this thought to anyone. Twice in this past year I have seen such an accolade (once by Wendie Prince for a Sr. Houndsabound fundraiser and more recently by Chris Bly regarding your quilt). This has m
eant SO much to me--more than any commissions or ribbons ever have. SO, thank you droolers,

anyone keeps track of them, please contact me. If we can't find them
all, at least we will find some. It is important to have a postal
address for the many (like myself) who do not or will not donate online.

Each year I ask that subscribers consider giving a donation to a rescue
(instead of a silly or unwanted gift) to friends and/or family members,
either as one of their gifts or instead of a gift -- esp to those who
"already have everything types" or just as a stocking-stuffer.

My extended family has done this for years as we're mostly all getting a
little long in the tooth and do not need another sweater or place-mat.
Although I always ASK for a car, what I get is a card saying "A donation
has been made in your name to Such-And-So Basset Rescue."

I am content with that.

But still hoping for a car.

Sigh. Ipo got out again today and was chasing chickens. I didn't even know until she appeared, panting, self-satisfied, outside our gate. a neighbor arrived soon after with complaints. It is legal in this state for people to shoot loose dogs that harass livestock. I checked the fence perimeter again and think I found another weak spot and repaired it. I really have to solve this problem soon. I am sure I can solve it. I'm just really anxious and frustrated.

?When I worked in the field we used to laugh and say there was always a
"disease du jour"--one disease or problem that either we suddenly saw a lot
of or that had drawn the attention of the medicos so that it was being
discussed at the Continuing Education seminars.

I had never heard of a folded or flipped spleen until Conley's-- and now
suddenly they seem to be popping up-- or folding over-- all over the place.

What I think is that with Bassets in particular it is paramount to be sure
the diagnosis is not a product of a mistaken view and so second opinions
are absolutely essential.

?of MertaLou, Professional Lady Basset.

Well.
It is certainly About Time.

The MotherPerson had run off again.
Do not mistake me: the FatherPerson is excellent fun. He is much more
considerate than his counterpart and does not put us in our crates nearly
as often or for as long as SHE does.
He gives more treats and more frequently and for more things like coming
into the house and running between his legs when he tries to walk and for
leaping on him if he moves. We have learned that when he stands up chances
are good we can pummel-----ah--love him into handing out treats so one of
us is constantly on Guard, as it were.

The MotherPerson just moves us out of the way.
Nevertheless she lends a certain Something to our lives that we miss when
she is not here and this time Mr.Doc became VERY upset at her absence and
began to panic and hyperventilate and cling to everyone in his concern.

I do not know where she went this time but she returned Sunday smelling of
strange dog, leaves, food, hugs and love and --bear? Can that be? I do not
know what they are and had to watch Animal Planet to learn but that is what
the smell is, faint and oh-so-distant but present. A tense and angry and
hungry smell mixed with barbeque smoke and laughter. There was another
smell that Doc and Conley say belongs to "Christopher"-- a male puppy of
the human kind. Now an adult puppy altho how that can be I do not know.

At any rate she is home now and we have hidden the bag she carried her
clothing in so perhaps this time she is here to stay.

Hugs and Snooter kisses to all
