[Dailydrool] Elbow dysplasia

Our Suzy Q. Basset had a growth plate solidify too early as a puppy which
resulted in elbow dysplasia and had her left front leg surgically broken.
She was already limping when we rescued her at six months old and the
orthopedic vet gave us quite a grim picture of her future if we didn't go
forward with the procedure. So of course we did and have never regretted
it. She was in a cast for a couple of weeks and was only allowed outside on
a leash and very limited activity inside. They xrayed her leg before they
removed the cast and then we had several more weeks of very limited
activity which was pretty tough on a puppy but we survived. You didn't
mention how old Reggie is but my understanding is that the procedure is
much easier on the puppy if done before they turn a year old. One of our
foster hounds, Tybee, had the same procedure done when he was pushing
twelve months old and he also did very well. Tybee moved on with his
forever family but I haven't heard that he has had any problems from the
procedure. It isn't a cheap surgery and my preference would be to
definitely have an orthopedic specialist do it. Suzy recovered beautifully
and loves to chase. She can run like the wind and actually caught a bunny a
couple of years ago. We were warned that she may still develop some
arthritis in her elbow as she ages and, now that she's nine, I have noticed
her limping once in a while when she's been racing out back but, for the
most part, she's been great and we don't regret doing the surgery at all.

Good luck with Reggie! The hounds are slinging get well and heart healing
drool to all in need.
