[Dailydrool] Sore Paws

Over the year, I've had several Bassets who got irritated paws during the hot, damp summer.  After experimenting with every powder, medication and suggestion possible, I came to the conclusion that there are only two things that worked for me.

My favorite was to use 1/2 cup cider vinegar or white vinegar to 1 cup of water.  Wipe the paws several times a day, especially after being outside, let the vinegar water sit for a few minutes and then dry thoroughly with an old clean towel.  Do not rinse off what little might be left on the paws as the smell will help keep your hound from licking the paws.

The other treatment I found effective was to put 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach (Clorox) into a cup of water and do the same to the paws except after the solution sits on the paws, take a wet rag and wipe off the solution.  I always rinsed the paws a few times before drying.  The only thing I don't like about this is that if you have carpet or flooring that can be affected by the bleach, you need to be sure that the paws are free from any solution so you don't discolor your floor.

The main thing is to keep the paws clean and dry.  Whatever you try, just remember that your Basset will probably try to lick it so make sure that it's something that won't be harmful.
