I have a top load too. They don't have big agitators in the
center any more so you can get more in. And yes, the bulky
setting is what I use for everything. If you want to soak
something you can just pause the cycle. I also get flannel
crib sheets to cover all the beds. They come off easily to
wash so you don't have to wash the whole bed. 
They make waterproof crib sheets too. You might also explore
getting a commercial machine if you have room
