Oooh.  I'm with Gwen.  The doggie door.  And fences.  though I recognize this is only a blessing it you own or have a tolerant landlord with a fenced yard.  We have had one or the other for the past number of years and it has been great.  (Our last landlord was happy to let us fence her yard at our expense.  Worth every penny, and cheaper than buying a house of our own at that time.).  with this combination, no needing to go to the door at 3 AM and take the dogs out on a leash.  Priceless.
