[Dailydrool] Beauford's Surgery

I have to say I can't remember if I told the Drool about Browyn biting
Beauford. We are not really sure what happened. She normally is too
submissive to bite anyone, but she went through this phase where she was
biting both boys and being quite cheeky. I don't think she has a clue how
lucky she was that the boys didn't reciprocate. I know they were pinning
her to the ground and barking in her face, but they weren't biting her or
beating her up. Anyway, the bite on Beauford's neck abscessed and he earned
a trip to the vet. He got antibiotics and we thought it was the end of it.
But, no. He got this swelling a little bigger than a quarter and I was
getting all kinds of blood and grossness out of it. The vet looked at it
and determined that it was a sebacous cyst gone wild from being irritated
by the bite. So I was told to put warm compresses on it and drain it
several times a day. Yeah. Right. This would have worked if it was Bugsey.
He will let me do just about anything to him. I think Browyn would have
been cooperative as well. But, Beauford is totally different. We call him
our cat. He comes and gets loved on when he is in the mood which is most
certainly not every day and gets up and leaves when he has had enough which
is usually before we were ready to quit. So he was not having anything to
do with the warm compresses. I still tried to drain it and cleaned it up
with a chlorhexadine pad. I called the vet to see how long we were going to
do this before removing it and he said 4-6 weeks. Meaning we would make a
decision the first week of October. Well, Friday the thing exploded. I got
it all drained out and then had to put direct pressure on it because it
would not quit bleeding. I called and got him into the vet that morning.
The vet said it had to come off. He gave him antibiotics and a very low
dose of steroids to help with the immense swelling (he can't take any
NSAIDS, that is why the low dose of steroid). Then scheduled him for
surgery on Monday. So he had the surgery yesterday. I felt so bad because
his favorite vet tech said he was so nervous about going under anesthesia
that he fought it and they had to change things up to get him to sleep. He
has had a lot of trouble with vomiting and nausea after anesthesia, but
this vet gives him a cerenia shot before hand and that has helped a lot.
The cyst had two huge blood vessels going to it, so it was never going to
go away. So, I am glad we got it off him. He is doing fine now and he has
sparkling clean teeth to boot!
