[Dailydrool] Clara's dental

Early this morning, Clara and I presented ourselves at the vet clinic for her dental. I chatted with the new vet, reminding her that Clara had suffered with vestibular problems just before Christmas and had a heart murmur. We agreed the procedure, including removing two teeth, should go ahead.
I then went home to do what every basset mum does in these situations - worry. But apparently, I wasn't worrying about the right things, because the vet rang me an hour ago to tell me my sweet, bright, funny, little lady is in kidney failure and it was unlikely she will be around by this time next year.
I know she is nearly 14 and that I cannot expect her to live forever, but this is Clara, who just yesterday was chasing me up and down, barking and playbowing. Clara, who still has a girlish figure, Clara who has recovered so well from Vestibular she no longer even has a head tilt. How can she be heading towards the bridge?
I just can't take this in. I always thought she would be the unusual hound that went on up until 16 or so. Apparently not. I will just have to make sure she has the best possible life in the time we have left together.
