I’ve had to to this

I used a ladies small (or extra small, depends in the basset).  Those are tailored and work better.  Snoopy takes a small and Gracie an extra small

Use a hair tie and gather us the t shirt in the middle of the back so it is tight around the waist.  For boys make sure it is abound the boys parts so it stays dry.  Put the hair tie on top of the dog, not under the belly.  Works great.
