I do admire Mariah.

My husband and I were away for two days on business on another island, so we left the hounds at “summer camp”

we have a lovely farm based dog kennel near us that has cabins (about the size of tractor sheds)and fenced grassy yards attachedto each cabinl (about the size of, um, well, maybe 50 by 50 feet? The sitting area of a McDonald’s, maybe?. ) each family group of dogs gets its own cabin. there are maybe ten cabins. campers bring their own beds (or use camp provided raised cots). dogs may bark as much as they wish, at campers in adjacent cabins or at the horses and cows on the farm. Lovely young employees walk each group of dogs in addition once a day and dote on the campers in their spare time. my girls neither love nor hate the place. Eh, a weekend at aunties with cute young camp counselors.

Mariah, pack leader, however, takes their stay at very seriously and sticks up for the rights of the pack (or at least herself). today the assistants knew we were picking up the girls so they decided to get ready early by removing the dog beds to the pickup area in advance. They easily removed the first two beds from the cabin and stacked them in the office. when I arrived, they told me the third bed was still in the girls’ cabin, however, because the little black basset simply refused to get out of it, no matter what they tried. when I went back to the girls’ cabin, sure enough, Mila and Ipo greeted me in the yard, jumping at the gate. Mariah was hunkered down in the dogbed, which had been dragged to the front of the cabin. she was wagging her tail furiously but not budging, saying “Nobody takes my bed except mom.”

I admire the way she stands up for herself. never aggressive (with humans—can’t say the same for dogs) but firmly opinionated! what a dog.
