when you reach down to investigate what is tickling your thigh, you will touch a hard, roundish skull covered in velvety fur, which is wiggling below your touch. (You will reach down to mid thigh before you touch it, as the dog is quite short, so far as dogs go.) As you explore it the area around the domed skull, you will find a long pointy snout on one end of the skull, with a tongue coming from somewhere below licking your fingers.  As you go the other way you will come upon hang down ears which are thin and oblong shaped with wrinkles at the top. They will probably feel like soft versions of those inner sole things you may put in your shoes.  Now,  go back up and across the, skull to the neck and start down the dog’s back.  It is maybe two feet long and if you feel around as you proceed to the tail, rather cylindrically shaped.  the middle part of the dog will be bending back and forth, side to side, like a hula dancer.  when you reach the tail and feel up it, you’ll discover a slightly spike shaped long tail making big circles.  If you go back to the legs and down, they are short with big elbows and big feet with longish hard nails.  At this point, you should duck, because the front part of the dog will now be in your lap and your face will be lavished with generous, sloppy kisses. when you come around again to the front you will find a barrel like bony chest and above that warm, silky, soft drapes of furry skin  in folds under the neck.
If you once had sight and know colors, imagine a long, short, pointy nosed , long eared, big-footed, spike-tailed dog with big brown eyes, a black mask, a black saddle over her back and white belly, legs, and feet, white around her nose, and a black tail with a white tip.  add rust colored dots over her eyes and on both cheeks, and just the narrowest rust colored border under the black saddle—a saddle blanket, if you can imagine.  Now animate the whole thing into a hula wiggle and a huge smile. That would be Mariah.  Have you ever seen a beagle?  Someone once asked my son what a basset hound looked like.  My son responded:  “Well, imagine a very big beagle that melted”.    Aloha,  Val Brewer with Mariah and Mila Basset and IPo Notabasset
