Senior Dental...….I just had this very discussion with my vet today. My boy is almost 12 and he has some tartar but not too terrible. He too had a dental a couple of years ago and it took him a long time to come out of it. My vet does not like to put seniors under for dentals. He told me if the dog's breath got too terrible that he would prescribe an antibiotic that would kill the infection and the problem would be solved for awhile. The tartar would be there, but that is preferable to endangering him with a procedure. The antibiotic could be prescribed as needed. Usually he says this handles the situation for quite some time.

Hi— I already posted this question on the Facebook Drool but feel closer to this original group. Eugene is 13 years old, in very good shape and just had his senior bloodwork done which his vet characterized as “perfect.” He has had dentals about every two years his whole life —his last was two years ago when he was 11. At that time I felt it would be his last. He seemed to me to have a harder time returning to normal after it but was his old self in a few days. I’ve tried to keep up with brushing but alas his teeth are pretty bad again. Our vet thinks it would not be unduly dangerous for him to have a dental but for some reason I am feeling very uncomfortable with the idea. I would never forgive myself if something happened to him as a result of a basically elective procedure. The responses on Facebook were pretty split between those who felt the risks from bad teeth outweighed the risks of anesthesia and those who would’t risk it on a dog his age. . There was a particularly tragic story of a healthy 14 year dying after the procedure which obviously is my worst case scenario. I’d appreciate any thoughts folk here would like to share. Thanks so much—Have been on the drool since we got Eugene almost 13 years ago and have always respected the knowledge of the members. Georgia and Eugene
Hello from Chomper,
Yes you are still my girlfriend.  I don't make friends easily, typically I snarl at anyone (man or beast) who tries to approach me.  Snoopy has taught me to howl and I have added this to my reputware.  If we are on a walk and mommy sees a person or a dog she can talk to me (don't worry, be brave, look at me, good boy) and usually I'll ignore them.  But when someone comes over I yell and scream and lunge and howl and snarl and I will bump them with my snooter and chase them too.  I'm obnoxious.  So yeah, if you want someone like me for a boyfriend, the good news is there isn't much competition!
Wow it's been very busy here at my house.  We had an, errrrr, episode with some raw carrots and I got one of them coughed up but the other one I had to get out the hard way.  It's all solved now but it was pretty uncomfortable for a while.  My buddy Snoopy loves to play but his hind end doesn't always do what he wants it to do so we mostly play rolling around on the ground with me taking breaks to do the basset 500.  One day last week we were playing on the patio and I didn't notice that Snoopy was standing on all 4s and I kinda tackled him and rolled him and he yelled out in (what sounded like) pain and didn't get up right away and scared us all ....... but then he stood up and walked for mommy to come get a special cookie and it was all ok.
Summer is here but it's been very mild, mostly mid 70s.  they are threatening rain this week which is weird because the rains should have ended last month.  Weird weather.
For Mothers day my Natalie came home from school.  She hand crocheted our momPerson a blue manatee which momPerson named Alfred.  I really, really, really, really, REALLY want to play with Alfred and so he is on a VERY high shelf.  I am working on a plan.  Snoopy and I got momPerson flowers and dadPerson got momPerson jewelry, which I don't really understand because she is not his mother, but what can you do.
Love n drool from Chomperwith Snoopy who is taking (another!!) nap and will be 14 next monthHi it’s dale

I trust my vet.  Right after Snoopy turned 13 he had a tooth abscess, his face swelled up over night and off to the vet we went and she put him in antibiotics and scheduled him to have it out.  She took out the one across from it too, didn’t like the way it looked and didn’t want to have to do this again

Snoopy had to go under again in January to deal with an eye which had succumbed to glaucoma and had painful high pressure. Once again. No choice.

Snoopy is partially paralyzed  in one back leg.  And the other one doesn’t work so hot either so after he has anesthesia he can’t walk for a while. Basically goes down in the back till the drugs wear off.  Then he is fine.  Or at least so far he has been

I’d trust your vet, or else get a new vet you do trust.  And if they say he needs it do it, you don’t want him to have a tooth abscess or anything. And gum disease affects their heart

Good luck
Dale

Georgia,
I can certainly understand and share your concern with doing a dental on a senior.  I feel that every time we
Have to do it.  Being a home for seniors here,  I have put many through the procedure, many with extractions and many with no extractions.  Of course if there are extractions, it means longer under anesthesia.
We have not had any bad outcomes except for a couple hounds come out of it worse than others.  You cannot predict it, and even if they did well the time before,  it may changes (at least with one of mine) how they come out as they age.
But I will tell you,  I am adamant about dentals with seniors.
My first senior Basset Sunny,  (who taught me seniors were the way to go!) ended up dying because I had let a dental go and her tooth had abscessed (she did not tell us) and the infection got into her system and she became septic.    16 years later, it still tears me up to think I could have maybe had her longer if I had only been more proactive with her teeth, and also saved her the suffering if how she passed.
So while everyone knows a bad story of anesthesia,  there is also a bad story of not taking care of their teeth.

Unless there is a good medical reason to not do it,  I would.
Just my 2 cents.

Drool to Eugene!
