I remember the first time I called Riche, asking for “Reesh” and learned that her name was pronounced “Ricky”. When her old Mac computer died and she was not able to publish “the Bugler”, I offered her our iMac that we were in the process of replacing. It was not new, but substantially newer than the one she had. She did not like PCs and hated new software. She was a Mac person! I did not want to risk shipping the computer, so I drove from NC to TN to bring it to her. Not a short drive, by any means, but it was a beautiful drive. She lived in a very rural area, with her partner, next door to her daughter. The dogs greeted me. There were several, of all sizes, but no Bassets any more. I got the iMac set up and connected a new printer/scanner. She was delighted to be able to scan the old Bugler issues!
She would call or once in a while when technology ticked her off and we’d walk through solutions. “College Girl” was someone she hired to help her with newer software. I got the strong impression that she was not overly impressed with “College Girl”. I loved her emails. We’d usually find a way to make things work.
I hate it when the IT world makes a perfectly good working computer “obsolete” and not work with new software. One day they did this with the iMac and she could no longer access PayPal. I had just replaced my MacBook so I sent the older one to Riche. It would still work with PayPal so things were good.... that is until she called to tell me that it got really hot so she threw it outside. I read the next day that they were recalling batteries that were catching on fire. OMDawg, I felt terrible. She just chalked it up to not more bad technology and found a way to use her laptop (that she hated) for PayPal. The Bugler kept her going.
