To the lady whose elderly Basset has ongoing ear problems: I know a couple
people who’ve been through this with their Bassets, spending years and
years on recurrent infections, medications, vet visits and etc., all while
their dog continues to suffer.

The first piece of advice I would give you is to go to a specialist if you
haven’t already. You need a veterinary dermatologist, or an allergy
specialist. They deal with ear infections all the time and have better
tools and education to possibly be able to help.

The second thing I will tell you is that I only solved this problem with my
own Basset by having his entire ear canal removed, a procedure Called A
TECA (total ear canal ablation). If your vet has not already suggested
this, please google and read a little about it and then bring it up with
the specialist. I personally believe that vets spend way too much time
futzing around with intractable ear infections, while the dogs suffer.

The recovery from a TECA surgery is a little difficult, but the dog will
never be in pain Again. I was told Joker would be deaf in that year, but I
haven’t noticed any difference in his hearing. Of course he is a Basset, so
it’s always hard to tell if he’s listening to me anyway! Feel free to email
me if you want more advice or links to reading material. I hope your boy
has an end to his suffering soon.
