It is certain, Donna, that no basset deserved glaucoma. It is a nasty
disease that most often takes both eyes. Our Dexter got it before we
adopted him--that's what lost him his happy home and brought him into
rescue and our home. He was such a wonderful hound that we decided to adopt
him shortly after we put him in the car to take him home. He was a foster
for about half an hour.

i was told, however, that bassets may do better with glaucoma than other
breeds because their noses are so good--though the progression of the
disease may be no easier on them, they find their way in a dark world more
easily.. Certainly that's been my experience with Dex. But from what other
people with other breeds have said, I think the older a dog is when it
happens, the harder it may be to deal with. (Though our Belvedere went
quietly and gently blind when he was around twelve, and he did just fine.)

In a perfect world, our bassets would never have the eye and back issues
they are so prone to. It seems so unfair that the most wonderful dogs are
so afflicted.

Healing drool and prayers headed in Maggie's direction. And strength for
you, because blindness in a basset is usually harder on the human than the
hound. I have been there, and even though I knew it was coming, it really
hurt.
