Dear Julie, I’m so sorry you’re facing this dilemma with Guinness. I’ve
faced it with a couple of my hounds. In hindsight, there was at least one,
my Barney, that I hung onto too long, for my benefit and not his. I
probably should’ve let him go peacefully to sleep about a year before I
actually did so. I’m forever reminded of something Rosemary Glennie, the
president of BHRG said to me years ago when I volunteered for them. “Better
a week too early than a day too late.”

from what you’re describing here, it sounds to me like Guinness does not
have much enjoyment left in his life. And honestly, it does not sound like
he has much quality-of-life. If you picked three things he loved as a
younger dog toys, wrestling with others, sniffing, etc.), which of those
three does he still have or is able to enjoy? I think that will give you
your answer.
Love,
Menzie, who’s had to say goodbye to Annabelle, Bonnie, Pippa, Millie,
Hector and Barney the last 10 years.
