Oh my gosh, thank you Susan Scott-Chambers for posting that heart warming essay. Even though we have had three bassets in the past, all of whom are waiting at the Bridge and probably romping and playing happily, it was Stonewall's passing that is still hard. We allowed Stonewall to get his wings in August, just one month short of his 13th birthday and he is sorely missed by both my husband and myself, but he is also missed by his half sister (same father, different mothers, born 5 days apart) Samantha. Lately we have noticed that she becomes upset when we are not in the same room together (even though we are in the same house) and we finally realized that she misses her support system (Stonewall). Your posting allowed me to understand that Stones is still nestled on the couch by my side or tunneled under the blankets on the bed each night with his undying spirit. He was a loving, stubborn lad(as all bassets are prone to be) that brought such joy and happiness in our lives, as well as many sleepless nights worrying about his care at the veterinary hospital at Kansas State University after his splenectomy in 2017 as well as his aftercare with tube feedings and dressing changes. I now look back and remember the look in his eyes during these weeks, it was the look of love knowing that we are doing all we can to get him better. But it was the look in his eyes those last days  two and a half years later that said even more. He told me that he was tired and was ready to leave. I promised him years ago that he would not leave alone and I stayed by his side until his final breath. Your post brought life back to my scarred heart and I will always keep it near me whenever loneliness creeps up again. Thanks again.Marie Paul
