Bugsey Hound Martin

4-18-2010 to 3-17-21

Bugsey was born on April 18, 2010 in the evening. He was the runt of the
litter and needed a little help to start breathing. He never let that stop
him from doing anything. He was able to start skyping with his soon to be
mother every week once he and his siblings were up and moving around. His
mom fell in love with him the very first time she saw him checking out the
computer that had been placed in the puppy pen. It was several more weeks
before she found out if she was going to be able to get him because there
were 5 people who got to pick out their puppy before her. Fortunately, God
made sure that Bugsey, then called Tiny Tim, was still available. Beauford
and Bugsey bonded the first time they met. They had such a fun time playing
with each other that the deal was sealed. Poor Bugsey started out his life
with his new family by getting a bath in his grandmom’s, Sharon, kitchen
sink. He was such a good boy on the ride home.

He spent the first couple of nights in his crate in his parent’s bedroom.
He cried the first two nights. Then he started sleeping through the night!
So, he got to sleep downstairs in a crate next to his brother Beauford.
Bugsey wins the award for being the easiest puppy ever. He was sleeping
through the night in under a week. He only had a handful of accidents where
he just couldn’t get to the door in time. So, he was fantastic at being
house trained. He always wanted to do what Beauford was doing despite his
smaller size, and he did not want help! He was also the only puppy that
detested being carried, but still loved to snuggle. He aced puppy class,
but failed at practicing. He was not about to let any puppy do better than
him in class. Unfortunately practice at home was very boring. If he was
expected to do something more than twice, he would run to the end of the
leash and then make up what he was supposed to do and then wait for his
treat. It was so hard not to laugh at him. Actually, that pretty much sums
up life with Bugsey. He always had so much fun that it was very difficult
not to laugh at him even when he was being bad!

As stubborn as Bugsey was, we were very fortunate that he lived to snuggle.
He liked to snuggle with both parents, but he was especially fond of
snuggling with his mom. We learned early on that the very best punishment
for being snappy with his siblings was to not let him have immediate lap
time. Lap time with Bugsey is the thing I will miss most. I haven’t sat by
myself in almost 11 years.

Bugsey got along great with Beauford. They had a lot of fun together. A
year after we got Bugsey, Browyn the Fairy Princess joined the family. In
the beginning, Beauford watched Bugsey like a hawk to make sure he wasn’t
too rough with little Browyn. Not only was she only a puppy, but she was
very small. She was able to get places that the boys were never able to get
into. It was always funny. Beauford would grab onto her back legs and hold
on to her, while Bugsey ran to get me. Browyn was not a good sleeper. After
two years of trying to get her to sleep through the night by herself, I
gave up. She and Bugsey moved into the big crate together and shared the
crate the rest of Bugsey’s life. This arraignment didn’t turn Browyn into a
great sleeper, but it definitely improved things. Bugsey was so very
patient with her even when she insisted on sleeping on top of him. He and
Beauford always split up taking care of Browyn. They never let her go out
by herself and alternated going outside with her. Bugsey was always looking
out for Browyn. If she managed to drag a toy outside, he would make sure he
got it back inside. If she was playing with a toy at nap time, he took it
with them to the living room so she could still play with it. I always
found that an endearing quality in him.

Bugsey was even great with the border terriers Bouncer and Brook who would
come to our house when their parents had to go out of town at the same time
for work or go on vacation. They would be crying and Bugsey would lay
beside me and let the girls lay on top of him while we watched movies.

Bugsey loved being outside and going on walkabout in the backyard. He would
wander for hours in the backyard when the weather was right. He loved
helping me in the kitchen by eating scraps of veggies and fruit. He would
stake out his spot and take anything I happened to have. He was usually on
my right side. Beauford on my left and Browyn would run in and grab her
food and run back to the living room where it was more exciting.

Bugsey never met a person he didn’t like. He got along with most dogs. He
wasn’t too keen on dogs that stood over him or his siblings at the vet. As
one of my friends recently said, to know Bugsey was to love him. He did an
excellent job of teaching me not to be so OCD, and to just relax and take
life as it comes. Most people referred to Bugsey as such a clown when
pressed to describe him, and it was so very true. He always found the humor
in most situations. He lived life to the fullest as it came to him.

Unfortunately, Bugsey went into acute liver failure out of the blue on
Monday March 15th. His vet had me take him to Auburn University. I was not
able to say goodbye as they whisked him away that morning. He never left
and was allowed to pass after they discovered a malignant tumor in his
pancreas on Wednesday March 17.

Bugsey is survived by his loving parents, Tim and Jennifer Martin, his
brother Beauford and his sister Browyn. He was met at the Bridge by his
good friend Snoopy Rutz who showed him the ropes and made sure he got to
say high to his sister Beaker and Louise, who in turn introduced him to his
sisters Bubbles, Banshee, and Blitzen, and his brothers Bismark and Elwood.
He also got to see his mother Wegi, father Rocky, and beloved grandmother
that understood him better than his parents, Gabby. He also got to meet up
with his littermates Wanda, Winston, and Caitlin. Snoopy introduced him to
all of the bassets on the drool that went before him as well as a couple of
non bassets that were figures on the Drool.

Bugsey has left a huge hole in the hearts of his parents. It will be a
while before that hole begins to heal. Have fun at the Bridge sweet boy!
Party hardy like we know only you can do. We miss you terribly, but we have
fantastic memories of your life with us.
