We joined the DD in the late 90’s some time after our first basset Annie came to live with us in 1985. She needed a forever home after her family moved in with parents who already had a dog. We informally ‘rescued’ her from a want ad; we’d never heard of basset rescue. She taught us so much about hounds! And so did the Drool after we discovered it following a mention in the 1997 Life magazine mention of the Michigan Waddle. Annie lived to be almost 16 and in her later years was known for going on one way walks. She liked to have one of her people call for a ride home when she had gone as far as she wished. She sat down and waited for curb service.
Our second basset was Zoey, a rowdy six month old adopted from Guardian Angel. She became a therapy dog, something she was clearly born to, and she too taught us so much about paying attention and fulfilling missions. She developed fears in her later years and slept in a bed in the tub/shower, at first during storms and then routinely. She was with us 14 years.
Our current basset is Lucy, adopted from Hounds Haven where she had been rescued from a shelter in Kansas. After settling into her forever home, Lucy has been the most resilient and adaptable hound ever. She is a great traveler and loves people; dogs not as much. She is extraordinarily skilled at getting her requests fulfilled in a low keyed yet effective manner.

We have been blessed with wonderful hounds, all very different and yet bassets to the core. We have met, either in person or online, a most marvelous community of basset people who enjoy good times and have excellent advice and great spirit. Thanks to all the Daily Droolers for sharing your experiences and stories about bassets, whether joyful, sad, educational, hilarious, heroic or astonishing. We’re in this together and it’s an adventure.
Linda and Lynn, with Lucy…plus Annie and Zoey ATB
