[Dailydrool] baby gates

We use baby gates in our home to block off the entry area and the kitchen
from the dogs. It's so nice to be able to open the front door without
"helpers", and I'm sure you recognize the importance of less counter access. :-)

Anyway, one little warning if you have an exceptionally bright and motivated
hound: it is possible for a dog to learn to put her mouth around the latch
and open the gate! It wasn't actually my basset, but my 14-yr-old samoyed
that learned this new trick recently! Fortunately for me, she also really
desires approval, so when I caught her in the act of opening the gate and told
her "no!" she actually stopped the behavior. I'm not sure what I'll do if Lucy
learns how to open the gate; I have a feeling that she wouldn't be so easily
persuaded to stop!

Lucy the basset (glad someone can open the gate for me!)
Melmo the samoyed (don't believe the adage about old dogs!)
