I know some people are horrified by shock collars, but we use one 
(mostly without battery) on a blue heeler who is a hysterical barker at 
certain times. If he's allowed to go on too long, the other 11 dogs will 
chime in and that cannot be permitted for very long. Random barking and 
occasional howling is tolerated when for good reasons -- sirens, 
terrorist mail carriers and water meter readers, sassy deer in the back 
pasture -- but sustained unwarranted barking is not acceptable for 
neighbors' sakes and our sanity, especially at night.
