[Dailydrool] Fearful Basset

I was hoping to get some advice in regard to Bellatrix (5 yrs. Old) who I
adopted in March from a Basset Rescue. Before coming to me she was a puppy
mill dog and therefore was never socialized (I also believe she was
mistreated).

At home she's a happy go-lucky girl with no behavioral problems. She's
learning how to play and is realizing that there's a world out there to
sniff. My only issue is that she is petrified of other people (anyone who
isn't me). She will go hide under the desk and tremble until they leave. I
tried several strategies. First I ignored her under the desk, being careful
not to give her any positive reinforcement while she's in hiding. I tried
to coax her out with a piece of steak which she turned down. When visitors
come I had them offer her chicken, which she wouldn't take either.

On one occasion when I had people over I put her on the leash and had her
sit next to me (in hope that she'd realize that nothing bad will happen).
She trembled so bad and hid well into the next day. It appeared to be quite
traumatizing to her and I hope not to repeat that.

Considering her rough start in life she's doing very well. I just want to
help her feel more secure and confident. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. I am hoping to hear from people who may have dealt with this
problem before.

Her brother is a lover of people and I'm hoping he'll rub off on her a
little.

Thanks!
Bryan
