[Dailydrool] Bloat

Here's the thing about Bloat.
Nobody knows what causes it.
There are as many theories as there are dog breeders, Veterinarians,
Nutritionists, Behaviorists and Owners. Put together.
I have heard:

moisten food
do not moisten food
give water after meals
withhold water after meals for 20 minutes
let dogs play after eating
don't let dogs play after eating
feed only dry
feed only canned
feed up off the floor
feed on the floor
feed small meals several times a day
feed once a day
Don't give dogs ice
Ice is Okay
Bloat is genetic
Bloat is not genetic
Shall I continue?
I have seen dogs bloat after eating quietly in their kennels and then
falling asleep. It doesn't mean sleep causes bloat.

The bottom line is watch your dogs. If you *think *they are bloating, if
they are retching but not vomiting, agitated, stomach distended,
glassy-eyed---get'em some simethecone as you haul your butt and your dog as
fast as you can to the nearest Veterinarian. It is a thousand times better
to be told your dog just has gas than it is to wait and see whether she is
bloating or not. Money well spent, every time.
