<< Many homes were small and some did not have doors to confine the dogs in another area of the house. >>

I am a big believer in gates. You can buy them in all kinds of sizes, from the block-off-the-stairs to the gate-a-single-door size. We have two gates in our home: one blocks off the kitchen, the other completely surrounds our stairs, so Abner cannot go up them.

A single-door gate is pretty simple to install. For small dogs, a dog slave could probably use the pressure gates that hold themselves in (for bassets or other large dogs, I think this is just a challenge. Jane did one in in no time, when she was just a pup).

Don't let people tell you they don't have doors. Suggest a gate. When your safety is at risk, suggest that if they want a visit, they will get a gate. No one should have to hit a dog to remain safe. Nor should anyone in such a situation have to risk her own safety.
