Oh boy lemme tell ya, I am an EXPERT on this!
After every single season Zelda had false pregnancies that were just
spectacular. Twice she got Mastitis, so watch carefully. Even my Vet was
amazed. I even took her to a repro specialist in the next state because I
was absolutely positive there was something horrible wrong with her
hormones. Nope. Not a thing. I was vastly relieved but nonetheless at least
3 times after her seasons we had her x-rayed to make sure==absolutely 100%
positive--- that she had not somehow become pregnant. (Only once and that
was well planned.) (Because I had two intact males at home, one of whom is
not a Basset, Zelda was boarded at the Vet's for the full 21 days of her
season. It kept the boys from killing each other, and Zelda from killing
them both, and me from going starkers. Nothing is as tedious as a male in
full rut.)

So the only way I know of to stop the lactating is to cut off food AND water
for 24 hours. Since I could never do this, I always boarded her for two days
at the Vet's. The first 24 hrs, no food--not a bit-- no water. It won't kill
her. It's tough, but it won't kill her.
Next day 1/4th of her regular food portion and small amounts of water.
Next day keep the food down and let her have water.
This horrible method actually works.It is tougher on you than on the dog.

Zelda is my first and probably last bitch. I had a lot to learn. She has
taught me well.
I also learned that while teats dragging on the ground is not something you
really want, Judges do not mind a matronly bitch. This is good, since Zelda
never recovered her previous trim lines. Even now, with cancer, she is a
fluffy lady.
