Cathy,
I'm so sorry to hear about Walker's hamster. Over the years, our kids have had bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, you name it--but the common denominator (with the exception of the bunnies) was that these critters don't live very long. I used to remind my children of that fact every time they got a new furry critter. It didn't make their sorrow any less, but at least it didn't come as a shock to them every time one went belly up.
When we moved to a new house a couple of years ago, I told my DH that I hoped the new owners of our old house didn't have occasion to dig very deeply in and around our flower beds. They would have thought that we were mass murderers of small creatures--there were so many "graves."
Somehow, burying them in the yard helped the kids get over their loss, rather than just tossing them in the garbage. Now, fish were another story. We just flushed 'em. :)

Sad ahrooos for your son,
Sarah and the Mobile gang
