It was nice to read this, because my Barney does this too.  He was neutered at 18 months, and his first six months were spent in his breeder's home full of intact females.  He doesn't do it around intact females (I'm not sure, bless his heart, that he knows the difference), but whenever he "marks" over another dog's pee outside.  He will then kick up dirt and leaves right over where he peed.  Sometimes it's more elaborate than others...
