[Dailydrool] Fences

One of the requirements for our beach house and our house in Salem was that they have fully fenced backyards for our dogs. I must admit that Roland found (on 2 separate instances) boards that were loose at the beach house and went into the neighbor's fenced back yard.  She was such a nice lady that she just laughed at Roland. Sadly, she moved to Georgia. We don't live near busy roads either.
Bill left the back gate open after mowing the lawn. We had just arrived home from the coast so Stella, who is a much better-behaved dog than Roland, met me at the car after she wandered out the back gate.  Oddly, Roland didn't notice the gate was open.

Hello to all,

I am sure this is going to be a heated subject. I received a formal
complaint against my two sweet baboos. Baying, howling, etc. I am told
that I need to get them collars.... But what the heck? Has anyone used
these? Any advice and what brand of collar would be appreciated.

I have co-authored a quirky book of Dog Haiku the cover of which features my
first rescued Basset, Winnie. Accompanying the haiku are great photographs,
many of Bassets I have known and loved! My latest rescue, Pete, from Basset
Rescue of Florida, is pictured with me on the back cover! It sells for $10 plus
$2 shipping and handling. I donate $25% to Basset Rescue, either House of
Puddles or Basset Rescue of Florida. I will date and sign it and include an
original Basset Hound haiku written on the last page. You can send me a check or
I do take PayPal.

Heres a link to a reverse sneeze video, I never knew what it was until Max
started to do it later in life and it scared me.

(
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/reverse-sneezing-in-dogs/page1.aspx?utm_source=dogcrazynews001et&utm_medium=email&utm_content=petplace_article&utm_campaign=dailynewsletter
  )

A dog owner calls a vet or emergency clinic because they think their dog is
making some strange choking-type noise. And he is doing it over and over.

They describe some weird noise their dog is making- it's not quite a choke,
it's not vomit, it's not a cough and it's not a sneeze. Most dog
owners describe it as being more like a sudden and repeated gag. What the dog
is actually doing is called a reverse sneeze . It can be normal for some dogs
and scary for pet owners that have never seen it. We have a video of what it
looks like in the article.

During a reverse sneeze, your dog will make rapid inspirations, stand still
with his elbows spread apart, extend his head, and his eyes may bulge. He'll
make a loud snorting sound, which might make you think he has something caught
in his throat. Many dog owners think their pet is suffocating during a reverse
sneeze episode. Each reverse sneezing occurrence generally lasts for less than a
minute up to two minutes.

Thought I would share in case anyone goes through it with their bassets :0)
Have a great day!

We were taught to put our fingers over the end of the dog's nose when
reverse sneezing starts. Sometimes this will stop it immediately and
sometimes it doesn't seem to so I pass this along as worth what you paid
for
it.

Shannon:

I love your idea to make the 17th of every month "Check The Fence
Day"! My
husband was sweeping up the leaves with the rider on Saturday and
(Thankfully!) noticed that our fence needed some repair. Some may remember
that after spending a fortune on that cute vinyl picket fencing to surround
our large back yard.we discovered that Gracie Lou FlatBasset (the brains of
OUR particular outfit) could squeeze herself between the pickets when
necessary. Since she was afraid of all humankind when we first adopted
her."necessary" was equal to "whenever I get a chance".
So.we walked her on
lead in the beautifully fenced yard until we'd completed the next phase of
the project.zip-tying chicken wire to the inside of each and every fence
panel. Have I mentioned we have a large yard? If I remember correctly, we
have 30-35 six foot sections. In any case.it worked and you can barely see
it. My husband noticed, however, that Gracie (we're sure it's her.the
other
two could care less) has adjusted some of the chicken wire with her
snooter.so that she can stick her lovely face through the fence in several
key locations. So, out came the zip-ties and the needed repairs were
accomplished.

Of course, it's another story for her other favored escape route which
fortunately only happens when we have a bad winter. Two years ago, the snow
in the back was so high, Gracie led Magnolia on a brisk neighboryard stroll
after walking OVER the fence. We had to go shovel a "moat" around
the
inside of the fence. That was a lot of fun in several feet of snow!

She's always thinking! Ellen & Miss Magnolia & Gracie Lou

It literally took me months to decided whether I really believed an invisible
fence would stop my hounds. We live in the country, but somewhat near a road
that gets busy at times. We have an adequate fenced area, but I wanted them to
have freedom to go wherever we go. I decided to try the invisible fencing. I
fenced in two acres.

What I found was that my dogs learned quickly about the fence. I was so proud
of them. I went by the instructions and took my time in teaching them. And
even when I forget their collars they have no desire to cross the fence line.

I never leave them out in the invisible fence when we're not here. I work
at home and so they can be outside as much as they like. When we're gone
they can use the pet door to go out back in the fenced area.

I frankly am convinced that even a stubborn basset (or four) can learn about
the invisible fence and respect its boundaries. Of course, some wild creature
could come into the yard and try to harm them. That is a risk I'm willing
to take to give them the freedom of laying in the sunshine, digging up the
pansies, chasing the cat or watching the birds.

I'm a believer.
