[Dailydrool] Potassium Bromide

Karen,

My sweet Kota began having seizures over two years ago. At first they were so slight, it was as if they weren't really happening. As time went on they became more obvious and seemed to be triggered by sound. If her jewelry clinked on the side of her water bowl, she would have small jerking motions. The problem we had was we could never get Kota to seize when she was at the vet. So finally we began video taping her during meal preparation. If I tapped a spoon on the side of her food bowl, she would react. We put together about ten minutes of her doing this and sent it off to a neurological doctor. He came back quickly with partial-complex seizures.

We started Kota out on Valium, which had no effect on her seizures. She was then given phenobarbital, which also did not effect the seizures. Finally we went to Potassium Bromide and the seizures stopped.

Kota has been on PB for over two years. At times, I think I see small jerks, but for the most part she is fine. When we started the PB it was in liquid form. Kota hated the taste. The pharmacist said she could make it taste like liver, so we tried that - Kota still would not eat her supper with the PB in it. Finally we went to pill form. Every morning she gets two pills and she is pretty good about taking them from me.

Good Luck to you.
