They do this by scraping the tartar off of the teeth.

The difference is that during sedation they can get below the gums and address any teeth that need to be pulled.? But a vet tech told me that the biggest difference is that when done properly, the vet tech polishes the teeth afterwards which prevents stuff from sticking to the teeth in the future.

They also have a waxy substance now available at the vet that you kind of put on the teeth with a q-tip like disposable device.? This goes a long way to prevent cavities.

The best case scenario will always be pet owners brushing the teeth daily.
