Sad ahroo from Wally, the "Brad Pitt of Bassets", who wants a brother-Tri-State rules!

Hi,
We have a lovely girl named Lucy who is about 10 months old. We got
her in July when she was about 8 months. She has a "horrible" habit
of snatching things off the counter. I bought her an expensive
furinator brush and in the one day we had it she destroyed the handle.
We have tried to push items back so they are not reachable, but behold
the power of a Basset!! They can stretch to incredible heights!! She
can apparently reach the middle of the dining room table. (I leave no
food unattended after a muffin snatching incident!)

She seems to do these naughty things when she is alone. We keep her
kenneled when we are gone from the house as she is not to be trusted
yet! She has tons of chew toys and plenty of love. She definitely is
pretty needy following us room to room. We just are finishing up some
basic obedience training.

Is this something she will grow out of? She knows that it's naughty,
we have busted her in the act. Should I just accept that this is part
of life with a Basset?

Thanks,
Jodi

About a year and a half ago, my husband and I got a 2 1/2 year old basset from
our local basset rescue.? He's a great dog and we have had no major issues with
him.? Last month, we got another basset, this time a girl, around a year old.?
They get along well.? They wrestle and play together, sleep on the bed together,

and even eat next to each other.?
?
However, when it comes to "people food" they "fight."? It had gotten to the
point that we were putting them out before we sat down to dinner, but then a few
days ago I was in the kitchen preparing dinner and the male dog when ape. I
think it is just the male dog trying to show dominance.? He has never hurt the
female (who incidentally is literally half his size...he weighs 60 pounds and
she weighs 30 pounds), but she isn't backing down.? She growls and barks right
back at him.? Then he usually pouces on her barking ferociously, and then I
separate them.
?
They also got in a scuffle a few nights ago when, for whatever reason, he didn't
want her on the bed.? So we banished them both from the bedroom.
?
Several of my friends that think they know everything about dogs say that I
shouldn't separate them...that one has to show dominance and that I need to let
them do their thing.? I am afraid, however, that someone will get hurt if I let
it go too far.
?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
?
Thanks!
?
The Braggs

Dear, Sweet, Innocent Jodi,

The answer to your question, in a word:

NO.

She may, when she is thirteen or fourteen years old and has some arthritis,
not be quite as anxious to counter surf as she is now, however, by then she
will have trained you well enough that the need to counter surf probably
will not arise.

Good Luck

MomPerson to Nigel the counter cruiser, Llewis who cannot, Mitchell who is
too dignified and Cooper who is not a
Basset but counter surfs now and then
anyway.

My littlest one is at the vet right now getting antibiotics through an IV.
I took her to the vet since she was walking in circles and then along the
walls and would get stuck in a corner. They don't know what's wrong but her
bloodwork is excellent and the x-rays are clear. It may be neurological.
My Maggie is 14 1/2 and on phenobarbital for seizures (though she hasn't had
one since July 2007). She is so small and petite with such long ears she is
constantly walking on them. She has such a sweet spirit and loves her meals
(she dances for dinner). If you could spare some drool that we find out
what is happening so that we can help her.

How great to hear that Izzy and Rudy have gone to properly trained homes in
which they will be adored and can rule the roost properly. Welcome buppies!

Pat commented: <<I had always wished I had known Annie as a buppy and could
never imagine how anybody could have ever given her up.>>

I have wo
ndered this about every dog who has gone through this door. The
year-old buppy who was just a wonderful dog. Why wasn't someone beating the
bushes to find her? She found the perfect home! Our Belvedere, who certainly has
his pottying problems but would have come out much better if he'd had his issues
dealt with early on. I could never figure it out, but I know all these hounds
have found their best, most joyful homes. It often works out for the best, as
long as rescues carefully vet homes and take back hounds who don't happen to get
a perfect one.

I just don't understand people. Dogs are a lot easier, most days.
Pam, with Drew, food slave to the Dashing Bassets

A few days ago I asked for drool, so I could treat Abner for eye and ear
problems. Well, the Drool's drool has worked again. The day after I asked for
help, Abner decided to let me treat his eyes. The next day, I started on the
ears too.

His eyes must have been in real pain, because he's been wonderful about that.
All I need to do is give him a really wonderful treat, and he holds it in his
mouth while I do his eyes. No problem at all. A second treat gives me a quick
shot at his ears, but he isn't as good about that. I'm just not putting up with
his snapping and running away. Don't stop the drool on that front, or I may just
have trouble doing it.

Thanks for the drool. It makes a big difference (or was he just in so much pain,
he caved in?).

And a happy birthday to Ernie. Hope your steak is really tasty!
Pam, with Drew,

She's a beautiful pup...and with an amazing number of naughty spots...she
should be quite interesting. I think we're going to hear a lot of great
Izzy stories as time goes by.

Congratulations, Beth. She's perfectly adorable. I'm sure that Annie had a
paw in this - and Izzy is going to have a wonderful life with you.

Dear Pat,
Delightful pictures of an adorable little boy! I imagine he has you wrapped
about his little paw already? With a face like that, it's going to tough to
stay mad at him as he nibbles his way through the house. (That's how
Daffodil gets away with things...)

Thank goodness that you have Pw. Lilygurl to teach him the way of the proper
slave trainer...

Congratulations. It sounds like that was a very worthwhile trip you took
across Ohio.

Fondly,
Katie, Lilie and Daffodil

As Robbie already posted, Tri-State Basset Rescue was mentioned on the Tyra
Show today. Whitney, winner of America's Next Top Model - Cycle 10, said
she adopted Baxter, a 3-yr old basset, from Tri-State recently. They did
bring Baxter on stage (although he didn't look like he liked it much). He
did entice Tyra to pet him, even after she said she was allergic. way to go
Baxter!!!
Whitney said she just did a photo shoot with Baxter for Animal Fair
Magazine, so look for them on the cover in an upcoming edition.
Looks like Baxter found a great home! Good job Tri-State!

Prayers and drool to all in need,
Hugs,

Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue is proud to have another Basset on TV. Baxter
(originally named Badger) was an owner surrender along with his littermate
Grizzle. The folks didn't have time for them anymore and after having them live
outside and not feeding them very well turned them in. They were both timid and
not very trusting back in April but came around after some time with our pack.
Both recently found their forever homes, Grizzle to a nice couple in
Philadelphia and Badger to a young lady in Manhattan some of you may have heard
of. Whitney Thompson best known as America's Next Top Model had grown up with
Bassets and her parents in Florida. She has placed Badger in the lap of luxury
he knew he always deserved on the east side of Manhattan. Today she was on the
Tyra Banks
show and introduced the world to her new adopted 'man'. The
following is the YouTube link of the show. The good stuff (Badger/Baxter)
starts at the 3min mark if you can't handle all the model talk. They will also
be appearing on the cover of Animal Fair magazine soon.

Thanks for the kind words about Otter, calendar boy for September 30.
We think he is pretty great. His ears are actually very long. They
measure in at 12 inches. He always steps on them when we are on walks.
We currently live in the Northern VA. area but are relocating to
Virginia Beach soon. Otter and his brother Radar would be honored to
have a visit from Daisy and bellyrubs are always welcome.

Can someone please forward me volume 25 issue 14? I was behind on drools and
just realized I am missing 14 so I won't go on until I read it or I will be
lost in future conversations.

The girls fooled me again today and got 2 breakfasts! Not the first, nor the
second time either. The boys (doxies) sleep upstairs and the bassets sleep
downstairs. (I can carry a doxie down the stairs, but not a basset). So,
anyhow, I come downstairs carrying the boys and let all 4 hounds out. I
come back in and the Dad slave had not wrote on the dry erase board if the
girls were fed. Tried to call him and no answer. So, Mazzie and Maggie are
getting excited to eat and drooling so I feed them. 45 minutes later the
Dad slave calls back and he did feed them breakfast. Well, dinner time
rolls around and not thinking at all I give the girls there full one cup
each for dinner. Then, I do the math and figure out they both had 3 cups of
food in one day! Yikes. They are very sleepy tonight and Maggie is just
repaying me in such a "nice" way for giving her extra food. I am sitting
here reading drools and something starts to smell so bad that my nose is
literally burning and I start gagging too. Yup, Maggie broke wind as she was
the only one in the office with me. Didn't phase her one bit. She just kept
on snoring. Me? I had to literally leave the room.

DRool to all in need,
Dee
Maggie and Mazzie (the girls)
Oliver and Cooper (the boys)
