There are two things you can do to shorten the quicks.  One is
easy
but drastic.  The other is hard but humane.  #1 - you
can take
your hound to the vet, have him anesthitized and have the
nail cut back
short - like even with the toe..  Some breeders
will do this
themselves without the anesthesia, but I believe this is
cruel.  #2 -
you can use a Dremmel rotary tool with the sanding
drum and coarse
sandpaper sleeves to grind the nail in such a way
that the tip of the
quick is exposed.  That tip will dry up and
recede.  Do this
every otheer day, or at least twice a week
until the quick and the nail
are short enough that you have a
"stealth basset" who makes no
noise on the linoleum
floor.
