Thank you to everyone who messaged both on and off list about suggestions
for Sally's growling. It certainly was never my intention to start a debate
about the use of shock collars, but reading each side of the fence is very
educational for me.
Personally, I don't think that a shock collar is necessary for Sally at this
point. The instances of her bad behavior are very few and far between, We
have only had her for two months and in that time she has adjusted to her
new family, friends, neighbors and environment so well, and we are still
adjusting to her and learning her quirks. Have we invited her on the bed in
the past? Yes. Did we give her an inch and did she take a mile? YES! So we
nipped that and will continue to "own" the bed. Last night she was an angel,
following us to the bedroom when it was time to sleep and going right into
her bed to settle down. She has lost her couch privileges for the time
being, and she's spending more (voluntary) time in her crate to chew and
play with her toys. As for other behavior, she knows exactly what is
expected of her: she sits and waits until we say "Good girl" before she can
approach her food dish, the same goes for treats. She also has to sit and
wait patiently before we let her outside or put the leash on for a walk.
But, those are areas in which we've been very consistent with her in laying
out that groundwork. The bed was always a different story ... "Aww, Sally's
being so cute this morning, let's put her in the bed!" which we would then
do and she'd walk all over us, literally and figuratively.

She will be a work in progress for as long as we have her, I'm sure, and the
support of this group is invaluable.

Thank you all!
Emily, on behalf of Matt and Sallybeans
