Just visited the vet today with both my boys, which relieved me of two
days income what with the tests and meds! His office visit charges
are reasonable, but some of those outside tests!
Anyhow, in the discussions, the topic of brushing teeth came up. He
says we should be brushing their teeth a minimum of 2 - 3 times a
week. I can see where that would be a dental health benefit so I'd
like some information from those who have gone before me.
What kind of brush should I get? I see there is a 3 sided brush for
cleaning all sides of the tooth at once. Any good?
Toothpaste - I read that human toothpaste is a no no - according to
some health experts, it should be a no no for humans as well! Instead
of doggie toothpaste, how about good old baking soda?
Technique - we normally brush teeth when they are getting a bath - in
the tub. However, putting a 55 pound Basset in the tub is a bit of a
chore for us. It would be much easier to have some outside bench or
area.
What about rinsing? I was always taught that when I brushed my teeth,
good rinsing was needed to remove all the particles. Rinse with a
spray bottle? A hose? what?
Mouthwash - I don't think they'd like Listerine too much, is mouthwash
necessary? How about using diluted hydrogen peroxide?
Thanks in advance for your advice!
