[Dailydrool] Submissive peeing

Hi Katherine,

I'm replying to your DD post about your new foster houndie.? You may already know this stuff so forgive me if this is too basic.??Submissive urination is?fairly common in females who lack confidence, have been treated roughly, or abused.? First I'd have her checked for a UTI just to rule that out.? Then I'd totally IGNORE the behavior.? Try to make greetings and departures (comings and goings) very calm and matter-of-fact.? Don't make over her, especially when coming into a room or coming in the door.? Don't bend down and tower over her to greet her.? Stay upright, use indirect eye contact, say "hello" in a calm quiet voice and then you can pet her or squat down to give her some affection once you're home for a while and she's calmed down.? If she does urinate, don't react.? Turn your back to her (and head toward the paper towels).? Calmly and quietly clean it up without making a fuss.? Don't say, "Oh, no!? Bad dog!" In fact, don't say anything.? Pretend it didn't happen.? It has nothing to do with housetraining per se.? Eventually, she will gain confidence and this will stop.?
