We used one of the "comfy cone" e-collars on Bo after his abdominal surgery a few months ago and it worked great. Basically this is an e-collar made out of heavy cardboard covered in nylon, which fastens with velcro. The collar has folds in the cardboard core, so it is more pentagon shaped than conical, and it is soft and collapsible enough that the dog can lay its head down easily, but stiff enough that it still serves its function. The one thing we needed to watch was getting the right size--although Bo's neck size was a "medium", he needed a "large" collar, so that the radius of the cone was the same length as his head and snout (and he couldn't simply reach around it). The nylon covering makes it easy to sponge off with soap and water. I still needed to take the collar off when Bo ate. We purchased the cone at Petco. It is a big improvement over the plastic e-collars.
