Last night my older daughter came home for the weekend. Of course, she arrived late and starving, I gave her a small loaf of bread and some soup.

When she finished, she brought her bowl out and stayed to chat with me in the kitchen, where I was making my packed lunch for today. After a couple of moments there was a thud. She had left the bread on the table and Rolph had helped himself.

I told her what I thought of leaving it in his reach.

Then, after packing up my lunch into a plastic carrier bag. We left the kitchen to go to bed. I went round doing last checks - windows, doors, locks, chairs on sofa, electrics off . . . hang on a minute. Where's Rolph? Checked the garden. No. Checked the lounge. No. Checked my bedroom. No. Surely not - ran downstairs to the kitchen and opened the door just in time to see the last piece of my lunch disappearing down his throat.

And there was no bread to make any more.*sigh*
